Treatment for cornea problems
Viewpoint Vision Services Ltd is an independent private eye clinic based in St Helens, welcoming patients from across the surrounding areas. We have an exceptional team with a wealth of experience, able to provide a wide range of treatments.
We provide keratoconus treatments to help with cornea problems. If you would like to arrange an appointment to discuss your eye condition and how our treatments may help, just get in touch.
Keratoconus
Keratoconus is a degenerative disorder of the eye in which structural changes within the cornea cause it to thin and change to a more conical shape than its normal gradual curve. The cornea is made up of bundles of protein called ‘collagen’. These bundles are normally held tightly together by chemical links between the collagen strands. This ensures that the shape of the cornea is constant. In the cornea, the normal chemical links between collagen strands are deficient, causing the cornea to be unusually elastic. The pressure inside the eye then pushes the cornea into a distorted, conical shape.
Problems caused by Keratoconus
Many keratoconus patients are unaware they have the disease. The earliest symptom is a slight blurring of vision or progressively poor vision that is not easily corrected.
Other symptoms of keratoconus include:

-
Glare and halos around lights
-
Difficulty seeing at night
-
Eye irritation or headaches associated with eye pain
-
Increased sensitivity to bright light
-
Sudden worsening or clouding of vision
-

Keratoconus can cause substantial distortion of vision with multiple images, streaking and sensitivity to light. It is typically diagnosed in adolescent years and attains its most severe state in the twenties and thirties. If afflicting both eyes, the deterioration in vision can affect the ability to drive a car or read normally. However, despite the disease’s unpredictable course, keratoconus can often be successfully managed with little or no impairment to the quality of life.
Our treatment options
We provide a full range of advanced treatment options at an affordable price for treating keratoconus such as:
-
Collagen Cross linking
-
Intacs
-
Implantable Contact Lens
-
Corneal Transplants
-
Intacs for Keratoconus and Keratectasia
-
Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments
Intacs
This procedure is capable of treating myopia from -1.00D to -3.00D and has the advantage of being reversible and adjustable. Our clinicians were involved in the early clinical trials, were the first to perform this technique in UK and are now one of the European training centres for this procedure.

The technique involves surgically inserting two small, thin plastic ring segments within the cornea through a tiny cut. The shape of the cornea is thereby altered and corrects the refractive error.

Since these Intacs are inserted in the outer edge of the cornea, the centre of the cornea remains untouched. The results with this procedure are equivalent to Excimer laser surgery but the advantage here is that the Intacs can be surgically removed or replaced if needed. If the Intacs are removed the cornea then returns to its pre-operative state.

Intacs cannot be used to correct higher levels of myopia or astigmatism. Some patients experience feeling of discomfort in the eye, others can experience halos and difficulty with night vision or an increase in astigmatism.
